According to James Stevenson's original note for this photograph (prepared circa 1885), the 'San Juan people belong to the same linguistic family with the Taosans. Their industries, habits, customs and religious rites are similar to those of Taos. They are, perhaps more advanced in civilized arts than the people of Taos,
